A study just released by Harvard researchers indicates that acid suppressing drugs increase the risk of pneumonia in hospitalized patients by 30%. It has been well established that these drugs alter the normal healthy bacteria levels in the gut, thereby inhibiting the body's ability to absorb certain nutrients and vitamins. However, this is the first study to suggest that these drugs alter the normal bacteria in the respiratory tract as well.
