Is Your Cholesterol Lowering Medication Increasing Your Risk of Cancer?
2008.09.03 07:06:09
An editorial just published in the New England Journal of Medicine, a well respected medical journal read by physicians, warned doctors not to dismiss concerns about cancer risk with a popular cholesterol drug. Although "experts" are working hard to persuade doctors of the drug's safety, 3 studies in July revealed the drug, Vytorin, had at least a 40% greater risk of cancer death than those who took a fake pill (placebo).

Vytorin is a combination drug that includes a "statin" medication known as simvastatin (Zocor) and Zetia. It is unclear which of these drugs is responsible for the cancer link.

Remember the following points when you talk to your physician about whether or not you will benefit from cholesterol-lowering medications:

New Jersey requires flu vaccine for preschoolers
2008.08.19 09:29:43

New York's Newsday (8/18, Flores) reported that "New Jersey now requires flu vaccines for preschoolers and children attending licensed child care centers." In the wake of the Hannah Poling case, which finally revealed the link between vaccines and autism, this is a travesty for children's health.

FDA puts American children at risk by deciding that low levels of Bisphenol A may be safe
2008.08.18 11:30:55

The FDA just ssued a draft report stating that BPA may be safe. The Washington Post (8/16, A2, Lee) responded  that the FDA "stands in contrast to more than 100 studies performed by government scientists and university laboratories that have found health concerns associated with bisphenol A (BPA). Some studies have linked the chemical to prostate and breast cancers, diabetes, behavioral disorders such as hyperactivity, and reproductive problems in laboratory animals." Once again the FDA based their findings upon industry-funded studies that found no problems.

Rather than seeing this as defeat, I believe we need to use the FDA's failure to reinforce the Parental Crusade or safer products. We can't rely on their definition of safety. So, lets shop smarter and spread the word. If you haven't read about the dangers of BPA and numerous other chemicals, please pick up a copy of Holler for Your Health and arm yourself with the information and resources you need to keep your family safe DESPITE corporate interests.

Victory for all who care for or about autistic kids
2008.08.15 08:34:26

In the wake of the horrific comments made by Michael Savage on his radio show, many people stood up to him...and WON!  This man called austistic children brats who needed harsh discipline. The implications of this are serious. Because the way people view autistic children determines how unjustly they are treated in society. This was obviously a major blow to children everywhere.
